Decades of civil war, elite- and clan-based governance, and a weak central government have prevented Somalia from establishing inclusive, peaceful and democratic political processes.

To build bridges between communities and encourage civic participation, in March 2020 we launched a national radio magazine programme called Gole Joog (‘Let’s Gather and Discuss’). Broadcast by six partner radio stations across Somalia, the show increases knowledge and understanding of political and civil rights and motivates citizens to engage in political processes. These partner stations are also producing additional 15-minute local programmes, making the issues from the main show even more relevant to the experiences and needs of their listeners.

We’re training producers from each station to produce quality content on social inclusion and civil rights and responsibilities – covering editorial policy, ethics, programme production, gender equality, and safety and security while reporting. And we’ll be providing ongoing mentoring and support throughout the series.

To tackle more sensitive issues, each episode of Gole Joog features a four-minute drama segment called Hankaab (‘towards a desired goal’). Drama has the power to address complex issues in a way audiences can relate to – helping them explore their emotional responses and challenge their pre-conceived beliefs.

Hankaab tells the story of a family of four as they grapple with inclusive and peaceful participation – Faayow, a daughter who aspires to be a politician; Shooble, a son in business who is less interested in public engagement, Nurto, the mother who is living with disability and is the family’s rock of support, and Haashi, the father who is a traditional elder.

One recent plot line focuses on Fayoow’s desire to open up a youth group. She discusses her plans with her brother, who warns her that she’ll face tough resistance from their stern father and traditional attitudes in the community. But despite her brother’s advice, Fayoow sets about convincing her family to support her.

We’re also backing up the show with engaging digital content, primarily via Facebook, to further encourage listeners to discuss these issues with their peers and leaders.

Bringing Unity, Integrity, Legitimacy to Democracy (BUILD) was funded by Creative Associates and delivered through partners Radio Mustaqbal (Benadir), Radio Garowe (Puntland), Radio Jowhar (Hirshabele), Radio Galgaduud(Galmudug), Radio Baidoa(South West State), and Radio Kismayo (Jubaland). It ran from 2019-20.
