THE DEAD ARE JEWELS TO ME

Could the practice of a forensic jeweller unearth hidden stories that lie beneath?

THE DEAD ARE JEWELS TO ME by Rose Hendry and Isla Badenoch

THE DEAD ARE JEWELS TO ME is a creative response to a forensic jeweller鈥檚 craft and interrogates whether a new scientific practice could unearth hidden stories that lie beneath a surface.

THE DEAD ARE JEWELS TO ME takes us into the mind of Dr Maria Maclennan FRSA, the world鈥檚 first forensic jeweller. There is a common presumption that Maria鈥檚 work is like an episode of a CSI drama. Maria鈥檚 practice is both subtle and deeply emotive, beyond the singular objective of solving a crime. A practice that opens up questions.

Working with Maria to artfully visualise her alternative approach within the field of forensics, this film presents a different type of forensic aesthetic. A sensitive cinematic lens visualises what Dr Maria sees and thinks as she undertakes a romanticised fictitious case-study. What is triggered by a ring with a missing stone? Through scripting an interior monologue in partnership with Maria, her narration guides us alongside experimental visual techniques.

THE DEAD ARE JEWELS TO ME delves under the surfaces of a piece of jewellery to look closely at what could be revealed of a person鈥檚 life.
