A Canadian scheme which gives homeless chronic alcoholics drinks several times a day will be piloted in Glasgow this summer.

Ottawa's Managed Alcohol Programme has provided people with controlled, regular quantities of alcohol in a warm, safe environment for almost two decades.

The aim is to stabilise their drinking, and provide mental health support. The scheme's received broad political support in Canada, but will giving free alcohol to alcoholics here be more controversial?
