Compelling first-hand testimony from the battlefield and the home front, recorded in interviews filmed over the last decades of the 20th century with Welsh men and women who lived through the Great War. Their memories are brought vividly to life by a wealth of archive footage and photographs. Episode one studies the period from the outbreak of war to the Battle of the Somme in 1916, where the Welsh Division suffered heavy losses at Mametz Wood.
