ÁùºÏ¿ª½±¼Ç¼ Media Action’s Indonesia team is using social media to grab young people’s attention for climate action. Young volunteers recently joined a climate initiative, planting 3,000 mangrove trees!

Some 70% of Indonesians are online – and they spend more time online than just about any other nationality. As of 2022, the average daily time spent using the internet by study respondents in Indonesia was around compared to those in the UK spending around . Social media plays a significant role in young people’s lives as they connect with their friends and the world. It influences their views on what's considered 'cool' and trendy, and what's not. They actively cultivate their online reputations, considering it an essential part of their daily lives.

With this lifestyle in mind, in 2020 our Indonesia team launched a digital content brand on social media called (Our Action). The goal was to inform young people and spark discussions on environmental issues and sustainable development. The content illustrates how the lifestyles of today's youth impact the environment – covering fashion, holidays, food choices and relationships, among other topics, and is shared across Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Tiktok, and Twitter. And the fanbase has taken off - with more than 220,000 followers on Instagram and over 166,000 subscribers on YouTube. of the work in action.

Recently our team reached out to followers, asking if they would like to take action and join a mangrove planting initiative. There was an enthusiastic response across the country and the team selected 25 local residents, aged between 18-22, for the the planting in North Jakarta. Teaming up with three community partners and six ÁùºÏ¿ª½±¼Ç¼ Media Action staff, the green enthusiasts successfully planted 3,000 mangrove trees in one day!

They had a lot of fun too - a win for the volunteers, as well as a win for climate.

Winda, one of AksiKita’s followers, shared that this was her first time participating in any environmental activity. She became interested after seeing it on Instagram and her friends were also intrigued to join. She said,

'It turned out to be very enjoyable. I think this is so cool, and next time I will definitely join again’

Most of the young people were first timers in such an activity and had a great day together with their friends, taking photos and tagging as they went for their own social media sites and so reaching a much larger audience.

The young people shared their worries about the pollution in Jakarta which has been getting worse. While many Indonesian youth are passionate about environmental issues and eager to contribute, they often face barriers when it comes to taking real action. However, this mangrove planting event shows that when given the opportunity and support, they are keen to make a difference.

Social media has an unparalleled power to shape young people’s perceptions, channel their enthusiasm and connect them with sustainable initiatives. By harnessing the power of this generation of change-makers, we can drive meaningful change on environmental challenges.

High five to our team!
